When it comes to the adoption of wireless technology, the transportation industry is definitely ahead of the curve. For many transportation applications, Lantronix wireless devices servers – WiBox® (external) and WiPort® (embedded) are a natural fit.

Networked transportation systems play a key role in enhancing public safety by reducing congestion and facilitating traffic management. Devices such as signal controllers, message signs, video scanners and cameras are essential for managing traffic on freeways and major surface streets. All are candidates for receiving network-enabling from Lantronix.

Traffic Control
Traffic control monitoring systems disseminate traffic and road condition data to optimize traffic management. A WiPort wireless device server has been designed into the controller of a camera that records traffic data, scans traffic flow and feeds into the centrally-located data center.

In-vehicle Cameras
In-vehicle cameras are used by service fleets, schools, bus companies and transit authorities to record what’s going on in the vehicle. The embedded WiPort device server downloads the video data from the camera to the network for remote, centralized monitoring.

Telematics Applications
Lantronix device servers are facilitators of telematics, the new wave of technology for the transportation industry. Telematics is defined as data communications between systems and devices. It incorporates networked products in a vehicle, so you can download information onto the central computer system.

For example, a tire company can analyze tire performance for pressure, safety and environmental data. Data is collected on a pressure sensor mounted to the tire and submitted to the telematics module, which includes a WiPort mounted on it. The WiPort transfers data back to a PDA or laptop.

Fleet Management
On-vehicle fleet management lends itself well to Lantronix device servers. Information including mileage, fuel consumption and vehicle performance is taken right from the vehicle’s CAN bus system, making data recording easier and more accurate.

Airport Applications
Using device servers from Lantronix, Northwest Airlines has connected its entire baggage claim system to the network. Our device servers are also utilized for remote monitoring in airport security systems.
