About IPv6

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is the next generation Internet Protocol address standard, intended to supplement and eventually replace the Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) standard most Internet services use to transact on the internet today. Specifically, IPv6 is a set of specifications from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) that’s essentially an upgrade of IPv4, wherein devices can use IPv6 as source and destination addresses to pass packets over a network. Advantages of IPv6 (over IPv4) include:

  • IPv6 supports source and destination IP addresses that are lengthened from 32 bits to 128 bits, providing for the continued growth of the Internet by providing relief for an impending shortage of network addresses.
  • IPv6 supports auto-configuration (does not require manual configuration or DHCP).
  • Supports a 1280-byte packet size or greater (without fragmentation).
  • Uses Multicast Neighbor Solicitation messages to resolve IP addresses to link-layer addresses; and uses Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) messages to manage membership in local subnet groups.
  • Uses ICMPv6 Router Solicitation and Router Advertisement messages to determine the IP address of the best default gateway.
