Case Study : Telos Systems
Problem:
Technically savvy users want to control their Omnia Audio Processors over their local network or via the Internet
but, without a dedicated network interface on the Omnia, this is not possible.
Benefit:
Lantronix's device server technology gave Telos Systems a way to control Omnia products over a network
using their existing serial ports.
Telos Systems, with headquarters located in Cleveland, Ohio, and offices around the world, is a leading manufacturer of ISDN, digital network and telephone interface products for talk-show programming, call-in radio segments, teleconferencing, audio production, remote broadcasts, and intercom applications.
Omnia, a Telos company, is known for its innovative digital audio signal processing expertise. Its family of digital audio processors for FM, AM, TV, DAB, Internet, and broadcast audio production are setting new standards for audio quality in the broadcast and Internet industries worldwide. In 1995, when the Omnia product line was first introduced, computer networking was in its infancy in the commercial broadcast environment. Today, technically savvy users want to control their Omnia over a local network or via the Internet. However, without a dedicated network interface on Omnia products, this is not possible.
Telos found a design-efficient networking solution with Lantronix's Device Server Technology. Lantronix's product line gave Telos a way to control Omnia audio processors over a network using their existing serial ports. Because Telos did not need to change the Omnia design, they have gained complete backward compatibility with several thousand Omnia processors already in the field. Telos has network-enabled everything from the single Omnia user installation to large broadcasting networks containing over 100 Omnias.
"Our customers can now manage our serial-port-only legacy devices over their facility's existing network structure," said Jeff Keith, Engineering Project Manager at Telos Systems. "The flexibility and ease-of-use of Lantronix's Device Server allows us to quickly respond to customers who want to control our product over a network."
