Case Study : i-STAT

Medical / Healthcare imageProblem:
Hospitals wanted a more efficient solution to connect serial devices to their network.

Benefit:
Hospitals can now connect serial blood analyzers to an Ethernet infrastructure enabling data transmission anywhere.

i-STAT is a recognized leader worldwide in point-of-care blood analysis products. Their revolutionary blood analysis technology is the world's only fully automated, pocket blood analyzer, which performs a complete panel of the most commonly ordered blood tests in a simple procedure at the patient's bedside.

The i-STAT System is currently used in more than 2,000 hospitals to perform critical blood analyses. Until about four years ago, hospitals relied on dedicated RS232 cabling to connect IR Links from each nurse's station to the central data station as a means of electronically transmitting patient test records from the hand held serial device. This dedicated cabling was limited by distance and could be very expensive.

A more efficient solution was to find a way to piggyback on to the hospital's Ethernet infrastructure by connecting the serial device to the hospital's network. i-STAT selected Lantronix's MSS and CoBox Device Servers for their easy integration into its product offering and as the only single port version able to convert a serial interface to an Ethernet interface. Hospitals can now connect serial analyzers to an Ethernet infrastructure enabling data transmission anywhere. This solution also helped hospitals to be more cost effective and space efficient.

"Lantronix has helped us by providing the necessary bridge to make our instrument integrate more easily into our customer's health care environment," said Mark Maund, Software Systems Engineer for i-STAT. "Their products and service combined has made them great to work with and overall a great solution for our customers."
