Case Study : City of Chandler, AZ

Building Automation imageProblem:
Chandler wanted to communicate between several buildings throughout the city via a dedicated line without interference and wanted to avoid high costs associated with purchasing equipment and running cables.

Benefit:
Lantronix's device server technology allowed the city to communicate through two serial ports, using one port for general users and the other as an alarm port. Also, Device Server Technology allowed the city to control buildings many miles apart.

The City of Chandler, AZ has a rich history expanding back to 1891. In recent years, Chandler's borders have been expanded and the population has boomed growing from 30,000 in 1980 to over 170,000 today. Chandler has a diversified economic base and while agriculture is still a vital element, Chandler now enjoys a strong manufacturing and electronics sector.

Chandler wanted to find a way to communicate between several buildings throughout the city, including the police department and other public safety buildings. With a dial-up system, the goal was to have direct access to any of the building's controllers at any time, by anyone without interference from one person to another. Putting in a central connecting network would cost thousands of dollars, require thousands of feet of additional cable, require protection from lightening.

Chandler selected Lantronix's CoBox-E2 product as a solution to allow the city to communicate through two serial ports, one port for general users and the other as an alarm port. Alarm information from 12 buildings is sent through the Ethernet to one central network printer.

Chandler has also integrated Lantronix's UDS-10. In the past, Chandler faced the problem of high costs, running over 4,000 feet of cable and having to purchase a Central Intelligence Unit (CIU) for each building. Using the UDS-10 has allowed Chandler to control four buildings, one with a CIU, another one close enough for a regular network (made easier with the UDS-10) and two other buildings miles away.

"I have been in this business for 25 years and I have never worked with more well-informed technical support like the people at Lantronix. They are absolutely outstanding," said Ken Krause, building maintenance superintendent for the City of Chandler.

"Lantronix technology allows us to enjoy the advantages of Ethernet communication at a very low cost," stated David Owens, CEM, programmer and consultant. "Lantronix provides all the technical assistance you could possibly use."
